The trade deal Mercosur European Union has failed. Mainly because farmers opposition against cheap food imported from South America.
Some said that the trade deal is vital for EU and farmers should face the economic competition and close shop if they can't compete.
First competition is not fair. South America doesn't apply the same protection of biodiversity.
So in the worst case European farmers will be bankrupt, Europe will be food dependent, big landowners will slash another hectare of amazonian rain forest to respond to the food demand and this for selling more cars in south America.
When you close a farm in Europe, you kill a tradition.
Peasants were the backbone of the nation state.
What we speak now in Europe are peasants dialects. Before 1600 all correspondence of the higher classes was in Latin in Western Europe, and in Slavonic in Eastern Europe, Greek and ottoman Turkish in south east.
Since 19 century the national identity was of peasant extraction. Folk songs inspired symphonies, peasants were depicted in pictures.
Peasants had a political influence long before 19 century. Thier riots ,jaqueries, Bauernkriegs shaped politics forcing the ruling class to concede some rights., and make society more egalitarian.
In conclusion the peasants shaped the national identity and political mindsets, so for countries to vote against them is to vote against their own identity.
