The movie is faceted like a diamant, you have to see it twice. It has the political satire,the struggle of artist,the ecological distopia.
But I think the core of the movie is about the art and it is uses.
Like in Hamlet art can be used to show truth.
It can make survivors cope with tragedy and heal.
It can bring together people.
It can manipulate people and exorcise their mentions in Display of public hate. The crowd chanting "Jump,jump" to main character Digger remind me of 1984 and public rituals of hate against Goldberg.
We don't know why Kenny financed this play.
To amend for the sins of his family?
To give hope ?
To restore the image of Digger ?
To control the population by making them venting they frustrations in a controlled setting ?
To forment revolt against government by gathering people in one place ?
What is strange is the different view of Digger between American characters: Kenny and Main Actor and European characters represented by the director
For Americans, Digger an Texas oil man, it is a serious character, a self made man with qualities that help him succed. He is respected because his personal succes story.
For Europeans Digger is a clown, stupid and dangerous.
This created disconfort in Main Actor soul (Tom Cruise) he is brought to cartoon an archetype, a model. It is like a French actor would be payed to cartoon Napoleon 1 in Britain.
European are seen as divided, impotents , made to endure catastrophes made by others.
Digger character corrupts like the snake in the garden of Eden
He makes others making his decisions: he says to the oil rig security responsible: "what decision do you take ? And I will do it. You want to close thecrig and fire 1000 workers?"
He feignts subordination to make others to take decision that he wants.
The movie is quite grim, and in a grin reality people search escapism in movies
Maybe because of that it is not successful.
This film must be viewed in schools and discussed.
